The Sky Grows Darker Yet

single-channel video of found footage, 2009

3 minute excerpt – no audio

The Sky Grows Darker Yet presents a sequence of images taken between dusk and dawn on 15 May 2009 by a webcamera in Antarctica. The camera is part of the German scientific expedition, and is considered to be one of the most remote webcams on the Antarctic continent.

Along with others from similar scientific expeditions, these images are being both broadcast and archived as part of a complex system of evidencing presence. These depicted landscapes (with their minimal imagery of dark nights and white snowstorms) have become markers, or placeholders--modern flags of ownership in a highly contested territory.
